Environment Victoria Campaigns Director, Mark Wakeham, said today that if the Federal Government adopted the proposed targets of 5-10% cuts to greenhouse pollution from 2000 levels by 2020. Australia would reinstate its international reputation as a rogue state on climate change. "Over 20 countries in the European Union have already commited to cutting their greenhouse pollution by 10% from 1990 levels by 2010 under the Kyoto Protocol. From a European viewpoint why should Australia have an extra decade to achieve cuts of a smaller magnitude than what Europe has already achieved?"

The proposed Latrobe Valley HRL coal-fired power station would not be eligible for any compensation under an Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and may therefore be financially unviable given its high levels of greenhouse pollution, Victoria's peak environment lobby group said today. A letter of advice provided to Environment Victoria from the Environment Defenders Office (EDO) advises that HRL will be liable for its emissions under an ETS should it proceed with its plans to build a brown coal-fired power station.
